Our verdict
Midjourney is the Ferrari of AI image generation. No other tool — not DALL-E 3, not Stable Diffusion, not Adobe Firefly — consistently matches its visual quality. The images have a coherence and painterly quality that feels genuinely artistic rather than algorithmically generated.
The interface is unusual: Midjourney operates primarily through Discord, which puts off many first-time users. A web interface is available but Discord remains the primary workflow. Once you adapt, the prompt engineering becomes intuitive and the community is a rich source of inspiration.
Midjourney v6 (current) dramatically improved text rendering — a historical weakness of all image AI — and photorealism. Portrait generation is particularly impressive.
There is no free tier. Subscriptions start at $10/month for 200 image generations. For professional designers, the $60/month Pro plan with unlimited (relaxed) generations is the practical choice.
The main limitation is control: Midjourney is less precise than tools like Stable Diffusion with ControlNet, making it harder to exactly specify composition, pose, or spatial relationships. But for raw output quality, it remains unbeaten.
