Our verdict
Perplexity has found a genuinely compelling niche: an AI that searches the web, synthesises the results, and shows its sources. For research tasks — especially fast fact-finding and current events — it consistently outperforms asking ChatGPT, because ChatGPT's knowledge has a cutoff date while Perplexity searches in real time.
The answer quality is high. Perplexity's Pro Search mode runs multiple queries, synthesises conflicting sources, and asks clarifying questions before presenting a comprehensive answer. The citation system is excellent — every factual claim links to a source, making it easy to verify.
The free tier is generous: unlimited basic searches with limited Pro searches per day. Perplexity Pro at $20/month provides unlimited Pro searches, access to GPT-4o and Claude 3 via the same interface, and file upload analysis.
The Spaces feature allows creating curated knowledge bases — you can upload documents or specify websites that Perplexity should prioritise when answering questions, making it useful for competitive research.
Weaknesses: for creative tasks like writing or coding, specialist tools (Claude, Copilot) are significantly better. And while citations improve trustworthiness, Perplexity can still make synthesis errors when sources disagree.
